Great Sound and Great Design!

Altec Lansing has created an excellent iPod Boombox with the iM7. Altec is one of the leaders in quality sound for you iPod, computer and other electronic devices. The iM7 has become one of the standards for Portable iPod Boomboxes. Everything is great about this device.

Sound
The sound is extremely rich and clear. The Altec Lansing iM7 has enough quality volume to make this sound good at the lake, tailgating, at the park. It has two 4inch side firing subwoofers that add to the fullness of the sound. The iM7 can fill a room with high quality sound making this a great option to use when around the house, working out in the basement, or working in the yard.

Design
The fact that Altec Lansing surrounds and protects the iPod inside the speaker system, gives this unit a rating of 5 for the design. When you have a portable system it is going to take a little bit of abuse, hit by Frisbees, gets knocked over by a nephew, a dog or even a nephews dog. The more protection you can provide your iPod the better. Other portable speaker systems leave the iPod exposed sitting on top.

The iM7 Looks good and has a solid construction. At around 10 pounds the iM7 has some weight to it. Just think of the weight as quality. This system is not meant to go with you in your suit case on business trips. So we do not feel that the heavier weight is a negative.

Price
The iM7 was originally $249. The price is now very attractive because you can typically find it for under $200. When you look as some of the im7's competition the prices are well into the 200's and one almost $400. With a street price of under $200 allows us to give the iM7 a value rating of 5.

Battery Power
AC adapter or Batteries. The battery life is pretty good. If you are not going to be running the iM7 on batteries for a while then it is best to remove them (they will last longer).

Remote Control
A remote control is included and can handle the treble, bass, volume up and volume down, and power. Not the most advanced remote control. Would be nice if the remote had a few more feature but then we are not purchasing the iM7 for the remote capabilities.

If you go with the iM7 we do not think that you will be disappointed!

Unfortunate design flaw

I bought my im7 last year about this time, and have been extremely pleased with its sound quality. Unfortunately, after about 6 months of very light use (all indoors), the carriage into which the ipod fits became difficult to open and close, and after a year it would no longer close at all. I have been very pleased with A-L's customer service, who informed me that they have had repeated problems of this sort and were pullling the im7 off the market because of it. They offered to replace it with an im9 or other product, and I am in the process of mailing the im7 back to them. Bottom line, given the reviews that the new im9 is getting, you are probably better served going with it over the im7.

Excellent

We like to do lots of outdoor activiteies and the iM7 speaker system from Altec Lansing works great. It has the best sound for a portable speaker system. Also the look is very sleek. The price is a bit high but if you look around you may be able to find a deal to make this more affordable.

I particularly like the the method that Altec uses to secure the different generations of iPod into the unit.

If you have the money this speaker system is the way to go. You will not be disappointed.

Weighs a bit, but excellent portability

Overall, this is a great unit.

It does however have it's flaws. With the larger IPods the cradle can be sometimes difficult to close, but seems related to the 'catch' mechanism rather than an overall design defect.

Sound quality is good, however, don't expect earth-shattering bass. The speakers are well done, although not as big as you'd like. Overall volume is great, letting you really use it as a decent boom-box.

Controls are good, although a bit unresponsive. It comes with a good remote and a slot for storage of it when transporting. The buttons are of the 'bubble' design, which is great for environmental concerns, but can occasionally be hard to press if you don't use a consistent pressure.

The 6-D Cell batteries can make this unit quite heavy, however, it seems justified considering it not only plays the unit, but is also quite capable of fully recharging the IPOD at the same time.

Features include the ability to display photos from an IPOD on a TV, in addition to an auxillary input to use it with other sound devices too.

Overall this is an excellent, albeit heavy and expensive unit, but as of yet, unmatched for features, flexibility, and quality.
