High marks all around for the Vers 2x wood iPod speaker system. It is very easy to set up and operate. The Vers 2x stands out in particular for the design and the all wood case. The craftsmanship is top quality. The Vers 2x puts out good sound, making this an excellent choice for an office, dorm room or any room for that matter. The Vers 2x will not fill a concert hall but we do not think was intended to. The $179 price tag makes it an excellent and affordable option for someone looking for a stylish and well made iPod speaker.

It is clear from the iPod speaker unit, to the remote control and packaging that quality was a top priority for Vers. This attention to detail shows through in the styling design. Almost every other iPod speaker system is plastic and metal and the Vers 2x is constructed from cherry wood. The front grill is removable. When the grill is removed the two black speakers have a very clean look against the grain of the wood.

Pros

The remote control is done right. On many of the iPod speaker systems the remote is small and not sturdy. The Vers 2x remote is a good size and easy to operate and will also give you full control of your iPod's menu system. Remote functions: turn the unit on and off, adjust the volume, mute the system, play and pause the iPod, fast forward and rewind, skip or replay a song, access your iPod menu, set the shuffle feature, and choose a play list. I find myself using the scroll wheel to find an album to play. With 50GB of music there is a big list of bands to sort through.

Sound from the speakers is loud and clear. The sound is not as good as the Bose or Bower & Wilkins Zeppelin but the Vers 2x does not have a $300 to $600 price tag. The Vers 2x is as good if not better when compared to other speaker systems in the same price range. For most people the sound is will be great.

Unit controls are simple and easy to access. There is a single white light on top of the unit that indicates whether the unit is on or off. The controls are power on/off, and volume up and down. If you need to change songs, the iPod is right there in the dock.

The Power adapter, auxiliary input, and auxiliary output are underneath. This keeps the cords out of the way and keeps one less hole out of the wood cabinet. If you are going to plug in another device you will need to make sure that the connector cable has a right angle adapter at one end.

Dock Adapters snap into place easily. 7 different dock adapters are available to fit your iPod.

Cons

Sound is not the best at loud volumes.

Final Thought

Vers has created a great looking and sounding iPod Speaker system. A full-sized and full-function remote make using the speaker system from across the room much easier. For audiophiles that have $350+ to spend on a system this may not be the unit for you, but for everyone else who is looking for a stylish and good sounding speaker system for less than $200 this may be the unit for you. Available from Amazon, Target and many other retailers.

Beautiful but fatally flawed

Written by Steven Morehouse

This is the cleanest and most elegant designed unit I found and I was excited to get it. The joy soon turned to frustration as the first unit just stopped working. I returned it (at my expense) and got another replacement only to have it fail in nearly the same manner. Returned (this time at retailers expense) and replaced and the third unit failed in minutes. That one is on the way back now. THe sound just stopped working. When it did work it sounded beautiful and looks even better. THe design is elegant and understated. The cherry finish was what I wanted, no glossy white plastic or black dust collectors. The way the ipod docks is vulnerable and the interchangeable cradle didn't fit my Ipod video well, but I could live with that. The fact that three units died on my shelf proves there is something drastically wrong at the factory. Too bad. I really like the looks and sound when it did work. I'm now shopping for another speaker. Don't waste your time on this manufacturer and be wary if you have one on your shelf. This is TRASH.

Great Unit, Excellent Customer Service

Written by ROB INFANTI
Saturday, 16 February 2008

I purchased my unit in early December and have to say that I was absolutely blown away. I had it set up and playing music within a few minutes of opening the box. Just minutes earlier, I had been playing my ipod through a JBL Micro Radial, which I thought sounded okay but looked a little too "modern". The first thing I noticed about the Vers 2x (besides the beautiful wood cabinet) was how full it sounded relative to the JBL. Wow! I could hear the bass lines clearly. The unit can be a little bass heavy for some tastes but you can adjust this with the EQ on the ipod. The unit is plenty loud and clean for my taste. I had been looking at units from Bose, Altec Lansing, Cambridge Sound etc. and for the price, this is an exceptional value.

Then the problem struck! Like a few other reviews have stated, after exactly one week, the volume started fading out. Since I live in Canada and do not have easy access to a dealer, I decided to send an email to the manufacturer, Sprout Creation. Within a couple of hours, they instructed me to send the unit back to them (at their expense) for replacement. They quickly turned around and sent the replacement unit to me and it has been working like a charm. Apparently, as it was explained to me in a conversation with them, they received a batch of faulty components in an early production run and some of these units got out to the market. It's unfortunate that this happened because as I see it, most people write these reviews only if they really love the item they bought or if they've had a problem with it. As you can see so far, the only problem that has cropped up in these reviews is this volume problem that has since been corrected. After receiving the new unit, I have absolutely no problem recommending the Vers 2x and I gladly give it high marks not only for it's great sound and appearance, but also for the excellent customer service.

Tip for Canadian customers: if you are receiving one of these units through Sprout Creations, have it sent to you through United States Postal Service. The USPS hands it off to Canada Post for final delivery and you won't be charged brokerage fees (and sometimes they'll waive the duties too!). When Sprout sent me my replacement, it came by UPS (not USPS). Before I could receive it, I had to fork over $31 in brokerage fees. Thankfully, Sprout Creations also covered this cost. As I said, excellent customer service!!!
